James (Wild Bill) Hickok was known for his unmatched sharpshooting skills as a lawman as well as his tendency to indulge in drinking and gambling. On August 2, 1876 he was playing poker at Sweeney's Silver Dollar Saloon in Deadwood South Dakota, and he made the mistake of playing with his back to the door. He was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall while holding a pair of black eights and a pair of black Aces, which has since become known as the "Dead Man's Hand".

I tried to make everything as authentic as possible, from the color of his eyes to his engraved 1851 Colt Navy revolvers. I've actually been to the saloon that he was shot in and they have reenactments of the event. Before the show one of the actors sat on my aunt's lap for some reason.

Done in Illustrator and Photoshop with a tablet.
